European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
