At least 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
